Meet Me at the Lake
Meet Me at the Lake - Carley Fortune
my review : ✮✮✮✮
This book is a lovely companion on a hot summer day. Even if you’re not enjoying this book while sitting on an old wooden Adirondack chair on a rickety dock overlooking a serene lake, you’ll feel like you are.
This story follows Fern Brookbanks, who has returned to her family’s resort in the stunning Canadian lakeside town of Muskoka that, was her single mom’s life work. She’s coming home following the death of her mom and grappling with what’s next for her… and the resort. One evening when she decides to leave the cozy confines of her cabin, Will Baxter saunters through the resort’s front door. She hasn’t seen Will in 10 years when they had one incredible day together. While the chemistry was palpable, the timing was all wrong, so they decided to meet 1 year later at Fern’s family’s resort to reconnect… except that Will never showed. Now, he’s turning up 10 years later, and Fern doesn’t know if she can handle losing him again.
There was a lot I enjoyed about this story; I loved the picturesque lake and depictions of Canada’s gorgeous landscape. Will is a man of few words, so I found myself honestly getting butterflies from the handful he shared with us. I was drooling over Peter’s sourdough and found myself slathering butter on my poor imitation of his bread late one evening. I thought the amount of steam was perfection for a non-B.R.A.D.. I realize many folks may take issue with a one-day love connection, but I am a total sucker for them (👀 Funny You Should Ask). I did, however, find the ending to be tied up a bit too fast for my taste. I have a proclivity for books where the man does a good bit of groveling (unsure what that says about me), and Will fell flat in that department. Despite any negative feelings, I still think this book is a treat and worth the read.
Fern’s mom enjoys a gin and tonic on the first warm day of the year. I love this tradition and have decided I’m copying it going forward. I found a recipe for a G+T that adds a few fresh raspberries, and I think that’s the perfect modification for summer. Swipe for the recipe, originally seen on The Food Network.
