The Favorites - Layne Fargo
my review : ✮✮✮✮
Fans of TJR, rejoice! You are going to love this modern-day retelling of Wuthering Heights! Set in the fast-paced and competitive world of ice dancing, this addictive novel about passion bordering on obsession will keep you enthralled until the very last page.
This book is told like an E! True Hollywood Story (think Daisy Jones & The Six) and follows Katarina Shaw, who has been hell-bent on becoming an Olympic ice skater ever since she knew what one was. It chronicles her rise to fame and her relationship with her dance partner, Heath Rocha. The story alternates between Katrina’s POV and the Netflix-style documentary that follows her life.
This book is heralded as an epic love story, but I wouldn’t go into it expecting romance. If you want a scandalous, fast-paced, biting, dark, razor-sharp story, this is for you. Seriously, this reads like a TJR book (the author actually thanks her in the acknowledgments), so if you’re a fan, don’t even think twice and just pick this up. Who knew ice dance was so freaking fascinating? (I hate to bring up Deep End (JK, no, I don’t) again, but it’s really fascinating to understand what the road to the Olympics looks like for each sport!). Ultimately, I really enjoyed this book and thought the whole Wuthering Heights angle was super refreshing. I loved my time with it and cannot wait to see it translated on screen.
For my audiobook lovers, I heard this full-cast narration is excellent and takes the story to a whole other level!
