Every Summer After

One Day in December - Carley Fortune

my review : ✮✮✮✮

This sweet story was the perfect kick-off to summer. I am a total sucker for books set at a lake house, as my childhood dream growing up was a cute boy moving next door to my grandma’s lake house!! I digress…

Sometimes I’ll pick up a book and just know immediately that I’m going to like it, and this fell square into that category.

This story is about Percy & Sam and alternates between present day and the past six magical, sun-soaked summers. Set in the most idyllic location, a small lakeside town in Canada, Percy moves in for the summer next door to Sam and his brother Charlie. We watch Percy & Sam go from friends to much more while growing up over 6 years and reconnecting each summer. That is, until something happens that causes Percy and Sam to never speak again. That is until Percy gets the call that Sam’s mom has died, and she will have to return back to the lake, where it all began.

This tender romance has writing that was a little reminiscent of Emily Henry. Totally touching and lovely. I will say it veers a bit on the YA side because so much of the story is told from ages 15-21, but I still found it totally enthralling.

I do have to mention, there’s a ton of drama about this book. If you read the synopsis and thought “hmm, that sounds very similar to Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren,” which happens to be one of my favorite books… you are not alone… or wrong. The plot is very very similar, which a ton of people have a ton of feelings about. I LOVED Love and Other Words so I will read 100 copycats and be content, but I can totally see how this would rub someone the wrong way.

Best enjoyed with white wine because every time Percy’s parents enjoyed a glass on their dock, I wanted to be there! A very dry Sauvignon Blanc is endlessly refreshing and my favorite for summer.

you’ll love this book if you love:

  • Second chance romance

  • Love and Other Words - Christina Lauren

my favorite quote:

“sometimes you just meet the wrong people are the wrong time… and then you spend every day afterward wishing that time could be rearranged.”
