The Sicilian Inheritance
The Sicilian Inheritance - Jo Piazza
my review : ✮✮✮✮
This book reminded me how much I love historical fiction. I found the subject matter fascinating and the mystery element impossible to put down! If you’re a fan of historical fiction, pick this up. It’s a no-brainer, especially if you are traveling to Sicily this summer!
The Sicilian Inheritance alternates between two women’s timelines, one in 2016 and one in 1906. In the present day, we meet Sara Marsala, a woman living in Philly whose beloved aunt has passed on, and her dying wish is for Sara to travel to Sicily to spread her ashes and learn what happened to Sara’s great-grandmother, Serafina. Serafina is our narrator through the 1900s and tells her story of what it means to be a woman in Sicily at a time when the men are fleeing the country in search of better opportunities in Italy and America.
The author does an exceptional job transporting you to present-day and past Sicily. I learned so much about Sicilian history and the brave & impressive women who inhabit the island.
This would make a great book club pick because the options for food & drink pairing couldn’t be easier (or more delicious!). I would, of course, pair this book with an ice-cold Negroni, an Aperol spritz, or a glass of Zibibbo (a white wine native to Sicily that I discovered via this book). Since I am with child, I am opting for Fever Tree’s Sparkling Sicilian Lemonade, although I am sure my Maltese ancestors would scoff at skipping a good cocktail just because I’m cooking a baby!
you’ll love this book if you love:
