The Wedding People

The Wedding People - Alison Espach

my review : ✮✮✮✮

Phoebe is headed to the gorgeous Cornwall Inn resort in Newport, Rhode Island, to end her life. When she arrives, she’s disturbed to realize that the entire hotel has been rented out for a wedding, and her booking seems to have slipped through the cracks. When the bride learns that there’s a non-wedding person staying at the hotel, she seeks Phoebe out, and from there, a very unconventional friendship is formed over the week-long wedding extravaganza.

This was one of my very favorite reads this summer. As you can probably tell by the synopsis, there is nothing light and fluffy about this book. Topics of depression and infertility are part of the very fibers of this plot, but somehow, through all the heavy material, the book is laugh-out-loud funny. Lots of dry, dark humor and commentary about what it means to be a woman, a partner, a friend, a mom… Between the lovable and eccentric cast of characters and the gorgeous backdrop, it’s no surprise that this book has already been picked up for a movie adaptation.

I would only crack open this book if you’re OK with confronting these heavy topics because they are prevalent. I have many chapters of my life where I wouldn’t have wanted to touch this book with a 10-foot pole. But, oh, am I glad I picked this up!

This book did such a good job talking about what it is to be human. It was liberating, wacky, and life-affirming.

How can I not pair this book with Vacation in a Cup? Unfortunately, Lila seems to have kept her recipe off the internet, so I must come up with my own. My Vacation in a Cup is based on a drink I indulged in many years ago while on vacation that I still think to this day. Swipe for the recipe! Also, swipe for my first cocktail video! Lmk if you want to see more of this going forward!

my favorite quote:

“…because she didn’t know if it was better to be correct or fun, and why did it feel like she always had to choose between the two?”
