Four Weekends and a Funeral

Four Weekends and a Funeral - Ellie Palmer

my review : ✮✮✮

Came for the romance and stayed for the honest portrayal of BRCA1, what it means to be a carrier, and the toll a double mastectomy has on a woman. I loved the strong female friendships in this book! I liked the will-they-won’t-they energy between the love interests, but I wasn’t going gaga over the romance, so that was probably my least favorite part (I am in the minority on this!) of the story.

Alison Mullally and Sam (her not-so-serious boyfriend) broke up and started trying out the whole ‘friends’ thing weeks before he died in a freak accident. When she gets to the funeral and realizes that he didn’t tell anyone they broke up, she plays the grieving girlfriend to avoid any awkwardness, knowing she won’t ever see these people again. But, when she gets roped into helping Sam’s grumpy (and insanely handsome) BFF pack up Sam’s apartment, her little white lie starts getting in the way of some not-so-little feelings.

I loved the banter, the buildup, and Alison’s relationships with her BFFs. Set in Minnesota, my midwestern heart burst with every mention of a landmark or food—hi @culvers !—that I knew and loved. So much to enjoy in this sweet, touching, and heartfelt novel. The love story just didn’t give me butterflies, hence the 3-star rating! Romance is so subjective, so if you find the premise interesting, give it a try!

It is best paired with a Minnesota martini (or a beer tini), which is quite literally beer with big juicy olives in it. My MN bestie insists the beer must be Michelob Golden Light, but you can sub a Coors Light if you’re in a pinch.

you’ll love this book if you love:

  • Banter

  • A Character drive novel

  • Culvers (LOL)
