One Perfect Couple

One Perfect Couple - Ruth Ware

my review : ✮✮✮

This is one of those won’t-keep-you-up-at-night thrillers that I am always looking for. The premise of this story had me intrigued from the moment I read the blurb, and overall, I found the story to be an entertaining departure from your typical thriller!

Imagine Survivor & Love Island had a baby: that is the premise of the reality show The Perfect Couple. When Nico gets the call that he’s been cast on this reality show for couples, he begs his girlfriend Lyla to agree to jet off to a remote island to compete with him. He knows it’s the break he’s been waiting for, but Lyla is hesitant to agree; she’s a scientist who has never watched a second of reality TV, let alone had any desire to compete on screen. Lyla agrees in the name of love, but once they get to the deserted island, it’s clear she’s out of her depth. The first challenge has Lyla questioning why she agreed to this, and things go from bad to worse when an overnight storm leaves the four couples on the island completely cut off from the rest of the world. Tensions are high, and each day, the chance of survival seems to dwindle.

I thought the pacing of this book was excellent, and I found the whole reality TV premise to be entertaining. I was sucked into the story while I was reading it, but every time I put it down, I kind of forgot about it—whoops! The story kept me on my toes, but the twists weren’t as twisty as I had expected them to be! I wouldn’t say this was my favorite of Ruth Ware’s novels (that would be The Woman in Cabin 10!), but I enjoyed it!

My favorite part of the story was that our leading woman was a scientist. It was so refreshing for a thriller to star a woman who is thinking critically and always a few steps ahead of the rest of the group. I found it refreshing!

If you like this, I think you’ll enjoy Rachel Hawkin’s “Reckless Girls” and vice versa!

you’ll love this book if you love:

  • A won’t-keep-you-up-at-night thriller

  • Survivor & Love Island

  • Reality TV (turned thriller!!)
