Iron Flame
Iron Flame - Rebecca Yarros
my review : ✮✮✮✮
Fourth Wing absolutely rocked my world earlier this year, so Iron Flame was my most anticipated book release by a loooooong shot. We pickup the story right where we left off in book 1 and I was ready to fall in LOVE again! I was ready for the book hangover; I was prepared to resent my husband for not welding shadows and/or being a dragon. Sadly, this was a like, not a love for me. I don’t even feel any effects of a book hangover! I think the difference between this and Fourth Wing for me was that I was able to put this down. You couldn’t pry Fourth Wing out of my cold, dead hands, but I kept finding myself distracted by other things while reading this!
I am obviously not an author, but I think it’s tricky writing the second book in a series, especially a fantasy series where the author has to do lots of world-building to set up the next 3 books. This story is chock full of dragons and fighting and endless conflict, but I was majorly missing the romance elements of Fourth Wing. Honestly, I didn’t have the easiest time getting into the beginning of the story, but I was thrilled when the plot picked up, and the tension and anticipation I missed returned for the remainder of the book.
I’m glad I read this, and the ending left me like, “WTF!?” which means I will obviously be picking up the next book in the series the minute it releases, but overall, I was a little disappointed with this. It feels blasphemous to even say that! Maybe it’s just impossible to have a whole series of 5-star books? I definitely think this is still worth the read if you were a fan of Fourth Wing.
What did you guys think? Is this just what happens with the second book in the series?
Iron Flame is best paired with “Dragon Breath,” the cocktail the fabulous Plano BR&B book club made for their Iron Flame meeting this week. Swipe for @chefmamasarah’s recipe!
