The Burnout
The Burnout - Sophie Kinsella
my review : ✮✮✮✮
In How I Met Your Mother (a show I LOVE to rewatch, although Ted can be so whiny at times but I just adore Marshall), Robin tells Ted, “If you have chemistry, you only need one other thing … timing. But timing’s a bitch.” And I agree! I am here to say I read this book at the PERFECT TIME, and I have chemistry with anything Sophie Kinsella writes, so I LOVED IT.
I have aspirations of living in London one day, so I am a total sucker for any story set in the UK, and this tale is no exception! I was totally transported and tickled by The Burnout.
Our dear Sasha is burnt out, her job is miserable, and she’s just hit a wall…. literally... and figuratively. Her doctor required she take a 3-week work hiatus so she decided to return to the seaside town she adored visiting as a child. Unfortunately, it’s February, so conditions are less than optimal, but Sasha is determined to have a health retreat that leaves her feeling reinvigorated and like a new woman. But, in true Sophie Kinsella fashion, everything goes sideways and it’s a total riot watching it unfold. Surprisingly tender, heartfelt, and life-affirming, this was exactly what I needed… If you need a pick me up and a good laugh, let this book keep you company. Cynics need not apply! This story is for the optimists (or those looking for a little jolt of optimism).
This book is best paired with a proper cream tea (or as close as you can get to it in the States). When it was mentioned in the book, it was my first time ever hearing this term and I assumed it was a delicious creamy tea drink. Turns out cream tea is a whole scones-and-tea snack experience that usually consists of scones, clotted cream or butter, strawberry jam, and tea. I think we Americans could take a page out of the Brits’ book and slow down in the afternoon with something smothered in strawberry jam.
I must know, are any BR&B gals Sophie Kinsella fans, if so, what’s your favorite book? I am sure I have loads more to read!
