Funny Story - Emily Henry
my review : ✮✮✮✮
Emily Henry could write the phone book and I’d be unable to put it down. I went into this story with sky high expectations and honestly am never let down by her. I think everyone has very personal reasons for why they love the EH books that they do, but what we all have in common is that we freaking love EH books.
Daphne & Miles are each unceremoniously dumped by their significant other- Daphne’s fiancé, Peter, calls off their nuptials on the eve of their wedding so he can be with his childhood best friend and love of his life, Petra, who in turn dumps Miles for Peter. When Daphne gets kicked out of her house so Peter & Petra can live in their blissed out love bubble, Daphne moves in with Miles.
Two of my favorite tropes ever are covered in this book- forced proximity & fake dating. EH writes fake dating in a way that even people who hate the fake dating trope will love.
In my humble opinion, EH’s writing style & banter is completely unmatched in the romance genre. This story- like all of her others- made me want to slow down and savor it. Her books are romances but the story is not just limited to that between the MMC & FMM (male main character & female main character, respectfully). She weaves a tale that touches on friendship, familial relationships and all the trauma that comes with it, and finding yourself as an adult.
This book is set in a fictional town in Northern Michigan, which I believe is one of the most gorgeous places in the country (I haven’t traveled enough yet to say world!). Reading this book will totally transport you which I think solidifies EH as the queen of the beach read (or, at least, tied with Elin Hilderbrand). Midwest gals- if you have a MI trip planned this summer, save this book to read it beachside.
Simply put, I had a great time reading this. I’ve swooned more over other EH books ( 👀 Book Lovers) but that might be due to Miles’ texting style…
Best paired with a sweet tea & bourbon on a hot summer night!
