Things We Do in the Dark
Things We Do in the Dark - Jennifer Hillier
my review : ✮✮✮
Given we all loved Jennifer Hiller’s last book, Little Secrets, this next thriller was one of the Beach Reads & Bubbly community’s most highly anticipated books of the year - and I had been waiting with bated breath!
I have to preface this review by saying that I am really picky when it comes to my thrillers. I am too wimpy for scary movies, but I really like a twisty thriller that stumps me throughout the book and leaves me on the edge of my seat. I love psychological thrillers but can’t stomach too much gore and am easily disturbed.
I just couldn’t take the pedophilia/child abuse in this book. I neither read (nor write) trigger warnings because - especially in thrillers - because there are always SO many, but this book is an exception. I finished but could barely stomach it. It honestly felt cruel making my brain read this book.
A good story, but when a friend asks for a thriller recommendation, I think I would leave this off the list.
All that to say, this book was Jennifer Hiller’s typical style: sharp writing, layered characters, and satisfying endings. If you can stomach a lot of very dark and disturbing content, this is for you.
Synopsis: When Paris Peralta is arrested in her own bathroom, she knows she'll be charged with the murder of her husband. But as bad as this looks, it's not what worries her the most. With the unwanted media attention now surrounding her, it's only a matter of time before someone from her long-hidden past recognizes her and destroys the new life she's worked so hard to build, along with any chance of a future. Because the only thing worse than one murder charge, is two.
you’ll love this book if you love:
Not love, obviously, but can endure very graphic child abuse content
