My Body

My Body - Emily Ratajkowski

my review : ✮✮✮✮

I was moved by this captivating compilation of essays.

Emily Ratajkowski is a model, actress, and writer. This book of essays is an examination through Emily’s lens of the body as a commodity, the power dynamics between men and women, and the male gaze. These are personal essays filled with nuance and contradictions that leaves you feeling that Emily is still trying to figure it out- aren’t we all?

Yes, Emily is a stunning and wildly successful model. I found it refreshing that she could write about insecurities without pretending she isn’t stunningly gorgeous. This isn’t a book about how hard it is to be a beautiful woman - this is a book about what it means to be a beautiful woman.

I was so disappointed to read reviews that were along the lines of “Emily has this platform to publish this book because she is a successful model, how can she write about hating the industry that put her in this position?” It honestly made my blood boil. As one GoodReads reviewer (Angel Chen) perfectly said “women are allowed to stay in the system that has taken advantage of them as they try to figure out how to take their power back”

The essays were raw, dark, and full of vulnerability while still being empowering and hopeful.

This is the kind of book I want to discuss with girlfriends - it leaves you wanting to continue the conversation.

I look forward to reading more of Emily’s work.

PS: This is a coverup from Emily’s line (@inamoratawoman) i bought a few years ago!!! I thought it was perfect for the occasion.

you’ll love this book if you love:

  • A compiling of essays that are bold, powerful, and unapologetic

  • Considering the commoditization of the female body

my favorite quote:

“I will proclaim all of my mistakes and contradictions, for all the women who cannot do so, for all the women we've called muses without learning their names, whose silence we mistook for consent. I stood on their shoulders to get here.”.
