I Have Some Questions for You
I Have Some Questions for You - Rebecca Makkai
my review : ✮✮
When I shared that I was reading this book, about half of you said you adored it, and the other half said you did not get the hype. It breaks my heart to say this, but I am in the latter category. I will say many esteemed readers & reviewers (including one of my favorite authors, Elin Hilderbrand) loved this book. I am in the minority on my take on this book, so if you’ve been contemplating it check Goodreads for some positive reviews!
This book is about Bodie Kane, a film professor, and podcaster who is returning to her boarding school ~20 years after to teach a short course. Once there, she’s consumed by the gruesome murder that happened to her classmate during her senior year. Looking upon the case with fresh adult eyes, she can’t help but feel like the wrong man is in prison, and maybe her students can do something to right her class’s wrongs.
This is a thriller but also a poignant social commentary. While the writing was excellent, I found the story itself long and drawn out, with an absurd amount of characters that I didn’t even care to keep straight. This book clearly wanted to tackle a lot of topics that are relevant & important to me, yet I found the result to read like mad libs of social justice issues.
Honestly, my main issue with the book was my utter dislike of the main character. Bodie- get over yourself!
By the end of the book, I was unsatisfied with the unanswered questions and loose threads flapping in the wind. That may very well be the point… but it was lost on me…. and maybe I am a dope and missing something?? I get it- she’s a Pulitzer Prize-nominated author, and I am a chick who reads BRADs. As always, this is just one girl’s opinion!
I received so many DMs from you guys telling me I had to read Rebecca’s other book, The Great Believers, which I have added to my TBR as I can see she is an excellent writer; this just missed the mark for me.
Excited to hear your feedback !!
