Wish You Were Here

Wish You Were Here - Jodi Picoult

my review : ✮✮✮✮

This is the kind of book I’m dying to talk to someone about. I just can’t stop thinking about it!

Let me start by saying if you do not want to read about COVID, I completely understand and this is 10000000% not the book for you.

This book is about Diane O’Toole, who leads a very fabulous New York City life. She’s dating a surgeon, works at Sotheby’s, and is excited for the proposal she knows is imminent thanks to a ring box in her boyfriends sock drawer. As she prepares for her upcoming romantic trip to the Galapagos, the world starts shutting down due to COVID. At the last minute, her surgeon boyfriend is urged not to take time off so she goes on the trip solo, just after she arrives the island shuts down indefinitely…

This book is quite a whirlwind and caused me a bit of reflection.

In my opinion, this is a well told story that sticks with you. I do have a bit of COVID burnout so there were periods of time that I was loathe to revisit but overall I’m so delighted I picked up this book.

Life has been so strange and this book gives us the space to reflect on that.

Have you read this? I’m dying to hear what you think! It’s hard to review it without spoiling anything.

Our heroine drinks 100proof liquor in this book, let’s avoid that hangover and instead drink a pinã colada and pretend we’re somewhere warm 🍹

xx

you’ll love this book if you love:

  • Probably not love - but don’t mind reading about COVID

  • A story that acknowledges the peculiar state of the world

my favorite quote:

“Everything you’re seeing up in the night sky happened thousands of years ago, because the light takes so long to reach us,” Gabriel says. “I always thought it was so strange… that sailors chart where they’re going in the future by looking at a map of the past.”
