The IT Girl

The IT Girl - Ruth Ware

my review : ✮✮✮

I am a sucker for a book that has me on my toes about who the killer is. The first half of this book really gave me the creeps, precisely what I crave in a thriller! I loved the story setting (Oxford) and the sprinkles of dark academia - perfect for back-to-school time 😵‍💫. Books like this make me wish I was a student at Oxford, immersed in the library and skipping around to the pubs (I would prefer to avoid the murder if possible). This story was not groundbreaking, and you may ask yourself, “have I read this before?” but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Our story is about the murder of “IT” Girl April Coutts-Cliveden. Our heroine, Hannah Jones, meets April on day 1 of Oxford as they are roommates. April is rich, glamorous, and has the ability to dazzle just about anyone. When April is brutally murdered at the end of their second term, Hannah helps put the killer behind bars. Now, a decade later, the killer has died in jail, and the public has renewed interest in the case. Hannah’s world is rocked when a hungry young journalist comes knocking with new facts pertaining to the case that make Hannah start second guessing her account of what happened 10 years ago. The storytelling alternates between then and now as Hannah grapples with what really happened all those years ago….

I had a few frustrations with the book and felt like maybe it was a bit predictable, but I enjoyed my time gobbling up the story, and I am grateful for that. For me, the writing was easy to get sucked into, and the story flew by despite how long this book was.

Best paired with a vesper martini because the minute these gals enjoyed that martini in a dimly lit bar in the English countryside, I immediately added that entire experience to my bucket list.

Cheers!
