Same Time Next Summer
Same Time Next Summer - Annabel Monaghan
my review : ✮✮✮✮
This book feels tailor-made to be enjoyed on a warm summer day next to a body of water (…and maybe a few hundred feet from the first love of your life? ). This story exudes first-love nostalgia. I devoured this book in a night and loved getting lost in Sam & Wyatt’s story.
Samantha and Wyatt grow up together, playing on the sandy shores in front of their neighboring beach houses every summer. As they get older, their close friendship blossoms into love, and it feels as if being together forever is inevitable. When we meet Sam at 30, she is engaged to someone else and is returning to the beach house to scout wedding venues. Sam has no fear of running into Wyatt as his family has been renting their beach house out for her entire adult life, but when she shows up and hears guitar strings strumming from the treehouse next door, she knows Wyatt is inexplicably in town. Sam resolves to be calm as she’s an adult and surely has gotten over the guy who broke her heart at 17… right? This story is told in two timelines and two POVs as we try to reconcile what happened to the love-struck teens of the past and the adults they’ve grown to be.
I couldn’t tear my eyes off this one. I thought the author did a great job of writing characters that were incredibly lovable, relatable, and human. I loved Sam’s eclectic, boisterous, full-of-love family. I am desperate for an invite to their summer home. I found the writing to be addictive and was so caught up in Sam and Wyatt’s love story that I found myself finishing this around midnight! I could have spent 100 more pages with Sam and Wyatt after the happy ending, which is always the sign of a good love story. Another sign of a good story? Laughing out loud! Nothing is sweeter than catching myself LOLing while reading a book, which I think is so rare, but Anabel always manages to make me giggle.
Annabel will always be an auto-buy author for me, as I know I can always count on a fresh, lovely romance with characters full of depth and wit.
This is best paired with a mai-tai. Unfortunately, my recipe sucks, so throw a cocktail umbrella in any drink, and let’s have a great summer night!
