End of Story

End of Story - A. J. Finn

my review : ✮✮✮

I have so many conflicting feelings about this book! The writing is exceptional, but my, is it verbose! When I was actively reading the story, I was totally enthralled, but when I would put the book down, I had no desire to pick it up. I was captivated by some characters, and others, I couldn’t keep their names straight. Overall, a compelling story that took me a while to get through.

This story is about Nicky Hunter, a detective fiction mega fan and journalist. Much to her delight, she’s been corresponding with the reclusive and world-famous mystery writer, Sebastian Trapp, for four years, ever since she first wrote him when she found an error in one of his novels. In his most recent letter, he says, “I’ll be dead in three months. Come tell my story.” So, Nicky crosses the country to get to San Francisco to live with the eccentric Sebastian Trapp and his family and write his biography before his illness claims his life. Nicky is excited and apprehensive about her trip because 20 years earlier, Sebastian’s first wife and teen son vanished, never to be seen again…

What a premise! The highlight of this story for me was San Francisco. After living there for a few years, I loved the atmospheric and spooky setting of The City. If you’re a fan of Agatha Christie novels and classic detective fiction, you may enjoy this one as it seems to be AJ Finn’s love letter to them.

Throughout this entire story, I just wanted to enjoy it with a really good bourbon. Bonus points for a dark wood library with worn leather seats and the crackle of a fireplace in the background.

Excited to hear what you guys thought of this one.
