Oftentimes, I find it difficult to get lost in a nonfiction book as nothing holds my attention quite like fiction. This story was truly an exception as I gobbled it up. This book is about Glossier, probably the buzziest beauty brand in the 2010s, founded by Emily Weiss at 29. This isn’t a takedown of Emily Weiss, nor a gushing portrait of Glossier, but instead, it’s a real, honest look at the brand, Emily Weiss, and millennial beauty culture.
I definitely fall into the category of a millennial who was enraptured by the Glossier brand. I wore the boy brow, attended the Chicago pop-up, & I proudly carried my pink bubble-wrapped bag around, so I am definitely the demographic this book caters to. Because of my enthusiasm for the brand, I found the subject matter simultaneously fascinating and nostalgic. How is 2014 nine years ago??
This was an excellent break from all the fiction I’ve been reading. I thought this was a fascinating look at the rise of a female-founded brand and a good three-dimensional profile of Emily Weiss (conclusion: she’s not a villain or a saint; she’s just human, and we need to fricken get over holding female CEOs to some absurdly impossible-to-meet standard). Overall I found the story entertaining but maybe a bit repetitive at times. Still definitely worth the read if you were/are a Glossier fan.
I skipped a drink and instead paired this with Glossier’s Ultralip Lipstick 💄
